Mary Kate has a passion for details. Drawing the details, that is. In her opinion, the fun really begins when an illustration she is working on is good, but not amazing. This is when you really get to get in there and focus on the tiny details – the snodgrasses, textures, cast shadows and reflective lights - that make a medical illustration stand out. This is why she loves medical illustration – for the details. Any artist can paint a landscape. But painting a cervical vertebrae which demonstrates spondylosis of the facet joint with medical accuracy requires just this type of passion. It was this passion that led her to start up MKIllustrations in 2006 (and the move across the globe to Hawaii that her husband’s military career brought them on). Mary Kate is currently sole proprietor of MKIllustrations and her award-winning work has been published in journals, newspapers, medical textbooks, brochures, and newsletters. She enjoys the flexibility, creativity, and challenge that comes with owning her own business and is always looking for new exciting projects. When not drawing blood and guts, Mary Kate enjoys dabbling in children’s book illustration. She is proud to announce her first children's book will be published in the Fall of 2010.
