I recently finished working on a project with a school in Australia. Our goal was to create materials to help educate Aboriginal women, most of whom do not speak English, about the choices available to them involving birth defect screening options during pregnancy.
We knew the materials needed to be heavy on illustrations and lighter on the text. The text that was included would be easy to understand for the caregivers to explain to the Aboriginal women. We ended up creating a large laminated, spiral-bound flipbook that would be used in clinical settings to show and teach the patients. We also created a smaller print version that would be available as a take-home aid, and finally several of the pages were made into large laminated posters to hang on the clinics' walls to help aid the caregivers in explaining certain topics.
The resulting materials turned out fantastic. The Aboriginal women who helped by providing feedback throughout the course of the project, were thrilled with the final product, and so happy that they were able to contribute and help. Knowing that these materials are being used and are helping to educate women is extremely satisfying.
